Fabrication of Lensed Optical Fibers for Biosensing Probes Using CO2 and Femtosecond Lasers

We propose a new method for precisely fabricating lensed fiber with desired focal length by first cleaving coreless silica using an ultrafast femtosecond laser without thermal effects and subsequently shaping the radius of curvature at optical-fiber end CO2 laser. The cleaved segment obtained is attached to long single-mode fiber. beam-exposure time power are adjusted melt coreless-fiber yield uniform, consistent, precise curvature, thereby realizing optical precision in this case greater than those conventional arc discharge treatment requiring fairly complex processes yielding relatively low fabrication accuracy. In our study, we observe difference between measured calculated lengths fabricated lens, possibly because exact value mode field diameter uncertain. On other hand, beam size knife-edge matches closely theoretical size. Our findings confirm feasibility fibers fiber-based biosensing lasers.
